About the BMW wheelchair

Now that it’s 2016, vehicles scream high-tech. Because previous racing chairs were made from aluminum, it was thought that an upgrade was needed. BMW took on the challenge and set out to create one of the most high-tech chairs on the market. The process began with 3D scans of athletes in their previous chairs and simulations that showed the capabilities of the chairs were examined. After the studies, BMW decided that carbon fiber would be the new, lightweight base for the chair. BMW did have to stick to a specific guideline: the creation had to be free of mechanical advantages.

“The idea is the wheelchair disappears and it is just about the athletes…” Brad Cracchiola, BMW Designworks
