What’s the difference between a sedan, coupe and hatchback?

If you’re about to purchase a luxury model, chances are you’ve run into the several available body styles. While having options is great, it’s also important to learn which type of vehicle will fit your life and style. In case you’ve been curious about the difference between a sedan, coupe, and hatchback, we’ve put together some visuals and an explanation of each body style below. This way, you can be well on your way to finding the car of your dreams!

What is a sedan?

Sedans have become a standard for many car buyers, because they typically offer four doors (two in the front – two in the rear) and two rows of seating (two seats in the front – three seats in the rear). The trunk space is normally separated from the seating, whereas a hatchback model is not. Out of all the body styles considered here, this offers the least amount of area. So, if you’re primarily looking for a smaller car with a good amount of trunk space, you may want to check out a hatchback.

What is a coupe?

Coupes are associated with style, and most luxury vehicles will have a coupe option. Inside a coupe, you will typically find two seats in the front, and two seats in the rear. In addition to less seating, many coupes offer only two doors, which means the rear seat passengers will need to crawl through the front door. While it’s not a practical option for many, we’re of the mindset that not many could say “no” to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe or the Audi A5 Coupe models.

What is a hatchback?

Hatchbacks can come in two-door or four-door configurations, but oftentimes, the trunk’s door counts as a door as well (making them either three-door, or five-door). The hatchback looks a lot like a sedan model, until you reach the trunk area, where it looks more similar to an SUV model. The trunk is not separated from the seating, which means that luggage is accessible from the cabin. There will be more vertical length in the trunk, with a door (complete with a window) that swings upward.

The moonroof and sunroof: what is the difference?

Shopping for a vehicle can be a daunting process, especially when there are so many unfamiliar auto-world terms. If you’ve been shopping for a luxury vehicle, you may have noticed that there are even more features to keep track of and understand, as luxury vehicles often contain more advanced features. Among the features you’ll find in a luxury vehicle (and some in the non-luxury segment) are the moonroof and sunroof. Now, there is a distinction between these two types of roof, but it isn’t the amount of tint (as people commonly think). The difference between a moonroof and a sunroof is pretty non-existent, because a moonroof is a type of sunroof.
